The pandemic may have got you thinking of moving to distant places. But those dreams can soon turn into reality. A host of countries, cities and states around the world are offering financial incentives if you’re willing to move. A low population, dwindling economy and dilapidated properties are some of the many reasons these places are opening doors to expats, according to a research conducted by insurance company William Russel. But there’s a catch. While some places require you to start a business, others may need you to renovate a home. The fine print around visas varies for different countries. Here’s a list of countries that will pay you to move:

The United States

The city of Tulsa is looking for remote workers. Along with a grant of $10,000 (Rs7,47385), it will provide you with free desk space and access to networking events.

Minnesota

The city of Bemidji, which has a population of 14,000 people, is looking for remote workers. In return, you will be granted $2,500 (Rs1,86,846) to cover moving expenses, a free co-working space and access to the Community Concierge Program, if you need help to set up and grow your business.

If you live in the state for an entire year, you will be granted about $1,600 (1,19,581).

To revitalise its town, Ponga, Asturias, is offering families €3,000 (Rs2,59,137) to help them settle in, plus an additional €3,000 (Rs2,59,137) for each baby born in the town. The town of Rubia is offering to pay you €100-150 (Rs8,636) per month to supplement your income.

To increase the town’s population, Albinen is offering expats under the age of 45 $25,200 (R21,76,398). But the cash comes at a cost. You will have to live in the country for 10 years. Plus, you should be a resident of Switzerland, or you must be married to a Swiss resident.

Candela and Calabria are some of the many places that are providing financial incentive to move. Candela offers singles €800 (Rs69,090), couples €1,200 (Rs1,03,639) euros and families €2,000 (Rs1,72,732). Applicants for Calabria must be under 40 to apply, and are entitled to €28,000 (Rs24,18,975) over three years.

If you’re looking to start a business, Ireland could be the place to test the waters. Enterprise Ireland is a scheme that supports new businesses. Last year, it awarded €120 million to start-up businesses. You don’t have to be Irish to apply, but you will have to register your business in Ireland. See other criteria here.

Start-Up Chile is offering people with unique business ideas up to $300,000 (Rs2 crore) CLP funding.

The tropical island is offering 20,000 Mauritian Rupees (Rs35,218) to startup businesses that move there. To qualify, one needs to demonstrate a unique and profitable business idea to a committee.

Countries that require you to renovate their homes

Italy’s €1 homes

Sicily, Sardinia, Abruzzo and Milano are all selling off homes for less than the cost of a McDonald’s burger. But you have to renovate their homes at your own cost within a reasonable timeframe.

Antikythera, Greece

Home to just 70 people, the beautiful island is offering free housing, a plot of land to build on and €500 (Rs43,206) for three years.

Legrad, Croatia

To save its dwindling population, the town in northern Croatia is selling homes for 1 Kuna (Rs11).
